Methodology & Scoring System

How We Rank Casino Hotels for Families and Non-Gamblers

Traditional guides focus almost entirely on gaming floors, slot counts, and loyalty tiers. We focus on resort amenities and family policies beyond the casino floor.

Why We Focus Beyond the Gaming Floor

Most Canadian casino resort reviews are written for gamblers. They evaluate properties based on table limits, slot machine selections, loyalty rewards, and high-limit lounges. For a family travelling with children or a non-gambling partner, those features are largely irrelevant. In every Canadian province, minors are strictly forbidden from entering casino gaming floors. In Ontario and British Columbia, the age limit is 19; in Alberta and Québec, it is 18. A hotel stay for a family depends entirely on what happens in the non-gaming areas of the property.

We created our methodology to answer a practical set of questions: Can our kids swim in the pool without restrictive adult-only hours? Are there casual restaurants on site that allow children? Can we watch a concert or show together? Is there convenient public transit or free parking? By evaluating casino hotels strictly on their resort amenities, family policies, and overall transparency, we provide a realistic picture for non-gambling guests across Canada.

The Six Weighted Criteria

Resorts are evaluated using a weighted scoring rubric.

Pool and Water Amenities

We reward properties with published pool and water amenities such as slides, splash areas, heated pools, and hot tubs. We deduct points for restrictive pool policies, limited hours, or published renovation closures.

Non-Gaming Activities

This can include ice rinks, bowling, shopping, spas, and transit connections.

Family Rooms and Published Policies

We evaluate published room layouts and policies, including suite types, sofa beds, crib policies, and pet rules.

Shows and Entertainment

We assess venue capacity, show listings, and age admission policies for entertainment venues.

Family Dining Options

We score resorts based on casual dining options and clearly published minor-access rules.

Transparency

Properties with more complete official information score higher in this category.

How We Handle Unpublished Information

Our editorial stance is strictly fact-based. We rely primarily on official resort pages, press releases, and official government/regulatory sources. If key information is not publicly reported, we note it as unpublished.

Before booking any trip, review provincial and venue rules for minors. You can compare amenities across properties using the non-gaming comparison table.

Editorial Independence and Booking Requests

We maintain absolute editorial independence. We are not owned by, operated by, or affiliated with any casino operator, provincial gaming corporation, or regulator, including the Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG), the British Columbia Lottery Corporation (BCLC), Alberta Gaming, Liquor and Cannabis (AGLC), or Loto-Québec. Our rankings are calculated using our scoring rubric based on published property facts.

To support our editorial desk, we participate in affiliate partnerships and booking referrals. See our policy on how this site earns. If you want assistance selecting a property, submit a request through our plan our stay page or review our responsible gaming resource.

Tell us about your family trip

We check rooms and the current rate with the hotel or a booking partner and reply by email, usually within one working day. No card details here. Please do not send names of children.

Here is how the lights stay on: when a family books through our links or asks our desk to plan a stay, the hotel or a booking partner pays us a referral commission. No hotel can buy its place in the ranking.

Got it. We will email you about rooms and the rate.
